It is believed that agate carving has a history of more than 1,000 years in the city of Fuxin. During the Qing Dynaty (1644-1911), the agate decorations were primarily from Fuxin. Fuxin is known as the “City of Agate”.
Reputated as “Jade Gold”, agate is a symbol of beauty, happiness, auscpiciousness, riches and honour.
This delicately carved agate depicts a monk wearing a flowing robe, holding a reliquary and prayer beads between his hands. The figure sits on a wooden stand. Such pieces would have served a decorative purpose.
